O MX321 é um regulador automático de tensão trifásico com sensoriamento e faz parte do sistema de excitação de um gerador sem escovas. A energia de excitação é derivada de um gerador trifásico de ímãs permanentes (PMG), para isolar os circuitos de controle do AVR dos efeitos de cargas não lineares e reduzir a interferência de radiofrequência nos terminais do gerador. A corrente de curto-circuito sustentada do gerador é outra característica do sistema PMG.

O AVR detecta a tensão no enrolamento principal do gerador e controla a excitação para manter a tensão de saída do gerador dentro dos limites especificados, compensando a carga, a velocidade, a temperatura e o fator de potência do gerador. A detecção RMS trifásica é empregada para uma regulação de tensão superior.
